EUPRERA 2026 Congress. Editors’ Roundtable: “Publishing, Legitimacy and the Future of Communication Research”

What kinds of public relations and strategic communication research will journals actually need five years from now? Is AI already reshaping how research is written, reviewed and evaluated? What will distinguish, by 2030, the journals that remain intellectually relevant from those that simply keep publishing more papers?

Date and venue: Thursday, 17 September 2026, 12.30–14.00, Salón de Actos / Auditorium.

These are some of the questions that will be discussed on 17 September, as part of the EUPRERA Annual Congress 2026 in Málaga, when editors of leading journals in public relations, strategic communication and related fields come together for a forward-looking conversation about the future of academic publishing.

The Editors’ Roundtable — “Publishing, Legitimacy and the Future of Communication Research” will explore emerging research priorities, changing expectations around theory and methodology, the role of journals in connecting academia and practice, and the challenges posed by AI, internationalisation, peer review, research impact and editorial responsibility.

The roundtable is designed as an open exchange with Congress participants, offering insights into what editors are looking for, how the field is evolving, and how scholars can contribute to shaping its next intellectual agenda.

Isabel Ruiz-Mora (Universidad de Málaga, Spain), Co-editor-in-Chief of the Revista Internacional de Relaciones Públicas.

Speakers

Some of the questions on the table

“What kinds of public relations and strategic communication research do you think journals will need more of in the next five years, but are not receiving enough of now?”

“How are you thinking about AI-generated or AI-assisted research, not only in writing, but in literature reviews, data analysis, visualisation, translation, and peer review?”

“Do you see a growing tension between publishing internationally and preserving research that is locally, culturally, or linguistically specific?”

These and other questions — listed further below — will set the tone for an open conversation with the Congress audience.
